What Does a High School Diploma Look Like? Anatomy and State Differences

Example of what a high school diploma looks like, with school name, student name, and gold state seal

A high school diploma is a single printed page, usually in landscape orientation on heavy parchment-style stock, that names the school and the graduate, states that the graduation requirements were met, and carries a date, signatures and a seal. Stock diplomas sold to schools are commonly 8.5 by 11 inches. What changes by state is the seal, the wording of the conferral line, the size, and whether the document names a diploma type such as New York’s Regents diploma.

Design is mostly a local decision. The Texas Education Agency sets detailed standards for the transcript and then states that “There are no requirements concerning the format of the high school diploma”, so two Texas graduates can hold documents that look nothing alike. The anatomy below is the constant, and the state notes cover what changes.

The anatomy of a high school diploma

  • School and place. The school name, usually with the city and state, sits at the top, often with the district name.
  • The student name, printed large, usually in a script or engraved face.
  • The conferral text: a sentence certifying that the student completed the course of study set by the state and the local board. California’s Education Code frames those courses as what a pupil must complete “in order to receive a diploma of graduation from high school”.
  • The date of graduation, sometimes written out in full.
  • Signatures from the principal and superintendent, sometimes a school board president.
  • A seal from the school, the district or the state. Texas lists the methods districts use on a diploma as digital images, stamps and embossed seals, and leaves the choice to the district.

What size is a high school diploma

There is no national size standard. GraduationSource, which prints stock and custom diplomas for schools, describes its stock documents as 8.5 by 11 inches in landscape orientation, with the chosen product the final authority on dimensions. Custom school orders start at 25 pieces, in raised thermographed text or gold foil on white or ivory stock. Clerkmans, another school supplier, sells diploma frames cut for 8.5 by 11 and 11 by 14 documents.

Older diplomas are often smaller, closer to 6 by 8 inches, so measure before ordering a frame. The stock is heavier than office paper, and the guide to diploma paper covers what schools print on. The real vs fake diploma checklist covers the physical tells.

What a high school diploma leaves out

Grades, credits, class rank and test scores are not on the diploma. They sit on the transcript. Texas awards a “standard, undifferentiated high school diploma” and records endorsements and the distinguished level of achievement on the academic achievement record, its term for the transcript. New York regulations require transcripts and permanent record cards to show which assessment a student passed and the score. The post on what a transcript looks like shows that detail.

Honors are the exception, reaching the page as an annotation or a seal. New York annotates the diploma to denote mastery in mathematics or science. In California, the Golden State Seal Merit Diploma is awarded by the State Board of Education and the State Superintendent, and local agencies affix its insignia to qualifying graduates’ diplomas. Scottsdale Unified in Arizona publishes which seals it affixes. The diploma seal guide covers placement.

How diplomas differ by state

There are fifty state variations, and they fall into a few patterns. Some states leave the design to the district and regulate only the coursework behind it. Some approve a state seal that districts affix. A few name the diploma type on the document or attach a state insignia to it. The five below show different patterns.

California

California legislates the course list, not the paper. Education Code section 51225.3 sets the classes a pupil must pass to receive a diploma of graduation, and district boards may add requirements, so design and seal choices sit locally. The one statewide marking is the Golden State Seal Merit Diploma insignia, which districts affix for graduates who show mastery in at least six subject areas, including mathematics, English language arts, science and United States history.

New York

New York issues named diploma types under Commissioner’s Regulation 100.5, so the document records which one a graduate earned. A Regents diploma takes 22 units of credit and the required State assessments, and the advanced designation adds assessments in mathematics, science and world languages. Local diplomas remain only for older cohorts, and students who do not earn one may receive a commencement credential instead. Endorsements and seals sit on top, starting with honors for a computed Regents average of 90 or above, mastery for scores of 85 or above in mathematics or science, a technical endorsement for an approved career and technical education program, plus the Seal of Biliteracy and the Seal of Civic Readiness. Mastery is annotated on the diploma itself.

Texas

Texas regulates the record and not the document. Every graduate receives the same standard, undifferentiated diploma, endorsements and the distinguished level of achievement are recorded on the transcript, and the agency states there are no requirements concerning the format of the diploma. What the state does control is the graduation seal approved by the State Board of Education, which districts may reproduce as a printed image, a stamp or an embossing. Misuse of that seal can be charged as a felony under section 37.10 of the Texas Penal Code. Students who finish the coursework but miss the assessment requirement may receive a certificate of coursework completion instead.

Florida

Florida draws a hard line between two documents. Statute 1003.4282 awards a standard high school diploma to a student who earns 24 credits with a 2.0 grade point average and passes the required assessments, and a certificate of completion to a student who earns the credits but misses the assessment or grade point average bar. Florida school districts are organized county by county, so the district name on the document is usually a county name.

Maryland

Maryland sets one statewide diploma standard through the State Board of Education, and local school systems issue the document against that standard, which tends to make the wording more uniform than in local-control states like California. Confirm the layout and the seal with the issuing school system, since the state publishes requirements and not a design.

Those patterns repeat across the country. Once you know whether your state regulates the design, the seal or only the coursework, you know roughly what its diploma should say. A college diploma follows the same logic with the institution in place of the state, and a GED credential differs again.

Seeing your own school’s design again

If the original is lost, the route to a real copy is a reissue from the school or district, covered in how to get a copy of your high school diploma. ValidGrad’s replica high school diplomas are novelty items made for display, printed on parchment with an embossed seal. They are not issued by a school and are not a credential, and the terms forbid using one to claim a qualification or to answer a verification request. Frequently asked questions

What size is a high school diploma?

There is no national standard. Stock school diplomas are commonly 8.5 by 11 inches in landscape orientation and older ones are often nearer 6 by 8 inches. Texas states there are no requirements concerning the format, so measure before buying a frame.

What does a high school diploma say?

The school and district name, the graduate’s name, a line certifying that the state and local graduation requirements were met, the date, signatures from the principal and superintendent, and a seal. Grades and test scores are left to the transcript.

Do high school diplomas show a GPA or honors?

Grades and test scores belong to the transcript. Texas records endorsements and the distinguished level of achievement there, while New York annotates mastery in mathematics or science on the diploma and California districts affix a Golden State Seal insignia.

Is the state seal on every diploma?

Seal practice varies. Texas approves a state graduation seal that districts reproduce as a printed image, a stamp or an embossing, while other states leave the choice to the district or the school. All three kinds are legitimate.

What does a GED look like compared to a high school diploma?

A high school equivalency credential comes from a state agency instead of a school, so it reads as a certificate. Texas issues a State of Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency to test passers and awards no diploma for the exam alone.
